Project ALFA fellowships include:

  • Full tuition remission (certain conditions apply)
  • A laptop computer and appropriate related software
  • Limited funds for travel to attend relevant program-related events

How to Apply


Project ALFA is offered at either the University of Alabama (click here) or Wayne State University (click here). Applicants must take either the GRE or MAT. Scores must be submitted as part of the application process. Candidates may apply to either program, in either the on-campus or distance-based programs. Fellows selecting the on-campus option for attendance will be required to enroll in some distance delivery courses to complete their program of study. ALFA fellows must meet all institutional requirements for the granting of the Master's degree.


Project ALFA has a fall only admissions. The first cohort of students began in fall 2011; the second cohort begins in fall 2012. Applications for fall 2012 are currently being accepted.


ALFA Fellowship applicants are required to write a single essay synthesizing the items below.
  • Statement of interest in universal access as it relates to Project ALFA
  • Take the Jung Typology Test (University of Alabama applicants only) and discuss in the statement of interest how test results relate to career goals and aspirations. Access the test HERE. There is no right or wrong result for personality type. All types will be reviewed and considered. The goal of this activity is to move toward a better understanding of self and interactions with others, placing human behavior at the center of information access.
  • Statement of philosophy for work with diverse populations as defined by Project ALFA
  • ALFA Fellowship applicants must submit one letter of recommendation from a previous professor, mentor, or supervisor that addresses the applicant's qualifications and match to the purpose of Project ALFA
